Selecting a hospital should be a joint decision between patient and provider. As a patient you will want to take into consideration cost, convenience and quality. Your health insurance carrier may specify the hospitals that are preferred under your specific plan. By going to one of those hospitals you may receive the highest level of benefits, which will decrease your out of pocket responsibility. Prior to selecting a hospital, contact your health plan or your employer's HR department to determine where you will receive the highest level of benefits and determine if you need to pre-authorize our hospital services. Communicate this information to your provider when discussing your best hospital option.
You may also select a hospital because it's located in your neighborhood. You may feel the convenience out weighs the cost and quality factors.
Depending on the reason for your hospital stay, you may select a hospital based on its superior reputation for treating the condition that brings you to the hospital. Your provider and multiple community based websites can assist you in sorting out the best hospital based on quality, cost and convenience.
